If you experience any red bumps or white-headed pimples around your hair follicles along with itchy sensation, then it can be due to a skin condition called folliculitis. Folliculitis is a skin disorder where people experience inflamed hair follicles. As we all know each hair on our body grows from a follicle and sometimes these follicles get inflamed due to infections from bacteria, virus, and fungus. Anyone can develop these bumps in different areas where hair follicles are present like face, scalp, hands, legs, thighs, chest, back, buttocks and groin. Folliculitis can be acute or chronic and in few cases, people also develop pus around the infected hair follicles
Folliculitis can also be induced due to risk factors like chemical substances, shaving, blocked skin pores due to different products, ingrown hairs, tight and rough clothing, wearing tight hair braids, injuries to the skin, obesity, weak immune system, usage of uncleaned hot bathtub and usage of few medications.
Types of folliculitis
Folliculitis can be of two types namely superficial folliculitis or deep folliculitis.
Superficial folliculitis- this type effects part of the follicles and few forms of superficial folliculitis include
- Bacterial folliculitis
- Razor bumps or barbers itch (pseudofolliculitis barbae)
- Pseudomonas folliculitis (hot tub folliculitis)
- Pityrosporum folliculitis
- Deep folliculitis- this type affects the entire follicle and is more severe when compared to superficial folliculitis. Few
- forms of deep folliculitis include
- Sycosis barbae
- Gram-negative folliculitis
- Furuncles and carbuncles
- Eosinophilic folliculitis
What are the symptoms?
In the beginning stages people may just have a rash or small red bumps near follicles but in later stages, it can spread and affect surrounding hair follicles also. Common symptoms of folliculitis include
- Red bumps
- Pus filled and crusty sores
- Burning sensation
- Swelling around the pimples
Folliculitis is not a life threatening condition and it is a curable infection. In most of the cases, folliculitis goes away on their own without any need for treatment. But in some severe cases, it can spread to other areas and lead to few complications like developing boils under the skin, dark patches or scars, loss of hair due to damaged follicles, cellulitis and recurrent follicle infections.
Can it be prevented?
One can prevent and reduce their risk of folliculitis by following few tips like
- Maintain proper skin hygiene
- Avoid tight clothes
