Vitiligo

Development of white patches on different areas of the skin is termed as vitiligo. Vitiligo also called as Leucoderma, is a chronic skin disorder developed due to damaged pigment cells called melanocytes. When these pigment-producing cells get destroyed, skin tends to lose its colour in that particular area due to lack of melanocytes. These white patches may further spread to other parts of the body and most affected parts of the body include hands, fingers, wrist, armpits, legs, feet, skin around eyes, neck, face, genitals and back. Even though people of all skin types get affected by vitiligo, the white patches of vitiligo are more visible in people with dark skin complexion. The hair present on affected areas like eyebrows, eyelashes and beard also becomes white or Grey. Vitiligo is neither a contagious disease nor a life threatening disease, but the white patches appearing on skin can affect individual physically and mentally. Vitiligo can increase the risk of depression and anxiety disorders. This condition is mostly seen in children and youngsters and even effects both the genders between 10 to 30 years of age.
